Ebook Website Promotion

Your website is your number 1 means of promoting your ebook. If you don't know html, you should at least learn a little and a little is enough. Before we get to html basics, let's start with getting a domain name. A domain name is the address of your website. It looks like this - http://www.e-booknow.com. Your domain name should contain the word or words that are most relevant to your topic. For example, if you are writing a vacation guide book on Paris, France you would want "Paris" to be somewhere in your domain name as well as something related to the word, "vacation".

To get suggestions on this my next step would be to go to the keyword selector tool and type in "Paris" to see what searches people have done on search engines like Google and Yahoo. If you do that you will also incidentally see that "Paris Hilton" is a very popular search term. In July 2006, over 2 million searches were done on the terms "Paris Hilton." Your ebook is about Paris tourism and not Paris Hilton. You will also note that over 55 thousand searches were done in July 2006 for the search phrase, "Paris tour." Perhaps a domain name with the words "Paris" and "tour" would be a good idea for your website related to Paris vacations. Incidentally, 264 thousand searches were done on "Paris" for the month of July.

See my video tutorial on domain names and how to properly name your website to get the most traffic - Quicktime required - be patient as video takes a minute or so to load.

If I type in the search term "tour," I see that there were over 63 thousand searches in July for that word. I also note that there were over 440 thousand searches for "Tour de France" in July.

There are a number of ways you can go with this information. One way would be to try to obtain the domain name, "www.paristour.com". You have two keywords in your domain name which are searched for on a very regular basis and that are related to your chosen topic. In determining where your page shows up on a search engine, great relevance is given to the domain name. If you already have two keywords in your domain name with the strength of "Paris" (55,000+ searches in one month) and "tour" (63,000+ searches in one month) then you may be well on your way to obtaining a high search engine ranking for those terms. The higher your search engine ranking the more traffic that will get to your page and the more people that will potentially purchase your product.

You may also be able to benefit from some of the people who find their way to your website looking for "Paris Hilton" or "Tour de France" - especially if you mention the words, "France," and "Hilton" within your web pages. If you don't want that traffic, then don't mention those terms.

To find out if your idea is available go to who-is.com and search for your domain name. If it is not available consider other alternatives.

Other thoughts concerning domain naming include coming up with something memorable, easy to type in, easy to communicate to other people, easy to put on a business card, etc. Avoid free websites on AOL and other providers where you get domain names assigned to you like http://hometown.aol.com/mlconley8/myhomepage/business.html. Such a domain name violates all of the above and will probably never be indexed in the search engines. I've elected to use a hyphen in my domain name e-booknow.com. I did this because ebooknow.com was already reserved. The advantage to the using a hyphen is that it helps search engines parse the words. The disadvantage is that if you tell someone the website domain name, it could cause some confusion.

Once you have the domain name, you can start building web pages. I suggest getting a free website template at Steve's free web templates. Steve's free web templates shows you how to take his templates and create a web page from start to finish. If you have questions on basic html, I suggest the resources at Web Monkey.

When you write the content for your web pages, I suggest that you don't get hung up trying to craft the perfect page. Just write what comes to mind. Once you get your rough draft down then you can go back and revise it. When you revise your draft, you want to turn an eye towards using the key words (the words that people will type into search engines to find your site as we began to determine above) often. You should use those key words in the title of your page (the title appears at the very top of the page), in headings, and throughout the text. Of course, don't make it too artificial sounding by using your key words way too often. Search engines rank your web page based upon its relevancy to the key words searched. Your web page becomes more relevant to the key words searched if those key words are found throughout the page. Your page can't be all things to all people, so don't try to cover too many different key words on one page. Devote a page to a few key words and devote other pages to other key words. To look at our example again, if your website is about paris tours and you want to attract people looking for such information then "Paris" and "tour(s)" should appear often in your website.

These are just some basic guidelines on search engine optimization. If you employ them, you should get started in the right direction.
